OURE- Program Overview
The Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience (OURE) program has been
established to: - Expand opportunities for a more active form of learning by students
- Encourage the interaction of undergraduate students with faculty
- Expand the level of research activity on the campus
- Help recruit superior students into our graduate program
- Demonstrate that teaching and research are compatible and mutually
reinforcing
Expectations of the OURE Experience
Students participating in the OURE program should experience: - A foundational understanding of how research is conducted in their
disciplines
- A greater understanding of the information resources available and how to
utilize these resources
- The fundamentals of experimental design
- How to interpret research outcomes
Applications
Applications for 2008-2009 OURE projects are due no later than April 1,
2008. An original application with signatures must be submitted to the
office of Undergraduate Studies at 209 Norwood Hall no later than April 1,
2008. - Group projects are allowable, but each student must complete and submit an
individual application. (A maximum of 4 students per group)
- Previous OURE participants are eligible if they satisfactorily completed
and submitted the report from the previous project.
OURE Application Form
(2008-09) OURE Department Coordinators OURE Report
Guidelines Students interested in a specific project suggested by faculty or in a
project of their own design should contact an OURE Department
Coordinator. Projects can be started during the summer
or at the start of the academic year. Statement of Qualifications Each participant and faculty sponsor is to discuss their project, come to
an agreement, and submit a one page application form describing their project
and the personnel involved. The faculty sponsor agrees to supervise the work
and certifies the educational value of the proposed project. Budget OURE students will be awarded a stipend of $1000.00 to be offered in two
payments, with the second payment upon submission of a final report approved by
their research advisor. Expendables are allowed to a $200 limit. No capital equipment funds are
provided. In the event that requests exceed available funds, proposals will be
evaluated based on the student's academic accomplishments, the likelihood that
the proposed project can be completed, the educational value of the proposed
project, and the commitment of the faculty supervisor to the project. Note for International Students Regarding OURE
Payments:
Generally, a foreign person is subject to U.S. tax on its U.S. source income.
Most types of U.S. source income received by a foreign person are subject to
U.S. tax of 30%. A reduced rate, including exemption, may apply if there is a
tax treaty between the foreign person's country of residence and the United
States. The tax is generally withheld (NRA withholding) from the payment made
to the foreign person. The term NRA withholding is used in this area
descriptively to refer to withholding required under sections 1441, 1442, and
1443 of the Internal Revenue Code. Generally, NRA withholding describes the
withholding regime that requires 30% withholding on a payment of U.S. source
income and the filing of Form 1042 and related Form 1042-S. Payments to all
foreign persons, including nonresident alien individuals, foreign entities and
governments, may be subject to NRA withholding. Report Guidelines: Each funded project must provide a final report (in the style of a journal
manuscript, when appropriate) no less than 5 pages in length, single
spaced. OURE
