Missouri S&T is committed to continuing its progress in engaging an ever larger percentage of its students in experiential learning activities.  Missouri S&T will “engage at least 90% of the undergraduate student body in one or more learning experiences beyond those in the traditional classroom setting during their academic career by 2011.” [Strategic Plan FY2007-FY2011]   Missouri S&T plans to benchmark the current level of student participation, expand current experiential learning offerings and develop new opportunities for engagement.

  ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Missouri University of Science and Technology is implementing a campus-wide service learning program. The mission of the program is to make reflective service learning an integral part of the education and life experiences of Missouri S&T students.

By developing a campus-wide service learning program, Missouri S&T will expand service learning opportunities to a broader range of Missouri S&T students and enhance Missouri S&T’s mission to be the premier source of leaders for today’s society.

The Benefits:

  • The service learning program will have a significant benefit for both Missouri S&T students and the community.
  • In addition to enhancing student learning, the service learning program will help the university build community partnerships and will provide our community partners with beneficial outcomes.
  • The program will encourage life-long civic participation, improve students’ skills in the work place and enhance personal and professional development.

What is Service Learning?

  • Service Learning is a term used here to describe a type of experiential learning where students engage in service to the community. 
  • Academic Service Learning is used here to describe a type of experiential learning where students in a course engage in service to the community; and the service activity enhances and relates to the course content. Academic service learning courses include reflective exercises through which students have the opportunity to describe what they learned from the service experience.

  Missouri S&T SERVICE LEARNING ADVISORY COMMITTEE

The role of the advisory committee is to:

  • Oversee the development & implementation of the campus-wide service learning program
  • Identify specific courses within the curriculum through which community service can be incorporated
  • Help to establish the long-term program objectives
  • Determine the means and timeframe by which the program objectives will be implemented
  • Establish methods for evaluating the program objectives

Boys and Girls Town of Missouri- Boys & Girls Town improves the lives of children with emotional and behavioral problems through superior, family-focused services.  The BGTM School supports the overall mission of the agency with heavy emphasis in education improvement of the child.

Ozark Rivers Chapter –National Audubon Society-The mission of the Ozark Rivers Chapter of the National Audubon Society is to conserve and restore the Ozarks ecosystem by focusing on birds, while emphasizing habitat preservation and restoration, through education, conservation, art, public awareness and advocacy for the benefit of all.

The Community Partnership- The mission of The Community Partnership is to promote awareness of community needs and work together with citizens and organizations to achieve better results with for children, families and communities.  The Community Partnership’s Young Parents Program offers pregnant and parenting youth ages 14-21 a trained community mentor who will support them as they progress through the challenging times of pregnancy and parenting.

ACADEMIC SERVICE LEARNING (AS-L) COURSES AT Missouri S&T

Academic Service Learning courses at Missouri S&T should meet the following guidelines:

In order for the Service Learning (SL) designation to be added to the course listing through the Office of the Registrar, the following application must be submitted to the Service Learning Advisory Committee for review and approval.

FACULTY SERVICE LEARNING AWARD

In 2009, The Office of Undergraduate Studies will award select Missouri S&T faculty who involve or influence students in academic service learning or community service activities outside the classroom.  All Missouri S&T students, faculty and staff have the opportunity to submit nominations for this faculty award. 

  • Nominations must include a supporting statement (maximum of one page) that describes how the nominee involves or influences students in community service or academic service-learning through his or her work with student groups, learning communities and/or classroom instruction.
  • Nominations may include up to three letters of support from department chairs, colleagues and/or students.

Nominations are due November 4, 2009.  The recipient of the 2009 Faculty Service Learning Award will be recognized an awards ceremony on January 19, 2010.

Academic Service Learning Survey
During the spring 2008 semester, The Office of Undergraduate Studies will conduct an Academic Service Learning survey among the faculty.  The purpose of this survey is to assess the current use of academic service learning at Missouri S&T and to gather data to help inform plans to expand the set of experiential learning opportunities.
